Ever since I read his Discourse on Method I have had a strange antipathy towards Descartes. I can’t explain it and it is not entirely rational. It is visceral and it is more against his personality and his attitude than against his principles, which were products of his time and though far-flung must have made good sense back then. I don’t even likes his face. I am petty, yes. Also, I have written a whole “method” on how to identify which philosophers deserve your irrational disrespect. I [...]

"I realize that I am, as it were, something intermediate between God and nothingness"-- Descartes, Fourth MeditationTom Sorrell's Very Short Introduction (VSI #30) to Descartes is my fourth selection of Oxford's Very Short Introduction series. So far, I've tried reading these books almost at random. Almost. I've wanted to try out different forms from big topics (History: A Very Short Introduction) to more specific, sub-field topics (Game Theory: A Very Short Introduction) that I'm moderately wel [...]

Descartes is one of the most influential Western philosophers, and this book is a useful first introduction to his life and ideas. The strength of the book is in positioning Descartes' writing primarily within the political and ideological currents of his time, and showing how exactly he's been forced to edit and finesse his writings in order to please the censorship and his critics. This helps explain why some of his works were not as straightforwardly written as one might have liked. The other [...]

This is a stimulating introduction to the life and work of Descartes which successfully interweaves an historical account of his life with clear and concise explanations of his philosophical work. Sorrel manages to squeeze a lot into the book, covering not only Descartes' obvious philosophical output - the Discourse and Meditations - but also his scientific and mathematical work - and presenting these in the context of the political and ideological background of the time. Some of Descartes' argu [...]

Descartes: A Very Short Introduction (Very Short Introductions #30), Tom SorellDescartes is perhaps best known for his statement, "Cogito, ergo sum, " the cornerstone of his metaphysics. But he did not intend the metaphysics to stand apart from his scientific work, which included important investigations into physics, mathematics, and optics. In this book, Sorell shows that Descarates was, above all, an advocate and practitioner of the new mathematical approach to physics, and that he developed [...]

This was a bit dull, but it did a decent job of answering that eternal question, why should we give a shit about Descartes? The main thesis is that a lot of his incoherent philosophy was written with the primary purpose of bolstering his system of physics, which he didn't feel he could fully reveal because it involved terrestrial motion. Weirdly, very little attention is paid to his contributions to geometry.

    16. Daniel Wright

A very reasonable biographical/philosophical introduction to the life and thought of an immensely influential thinker. Another author may perhaps have done a better job at explaining the nuances of Descartes' ideas, however.

I really like these Very Short Introductions. If not for this book, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have read about the life of an innovative mathematician. Although the book was too abstract for my tastes in places, I enjoyed it overall, and the abstraction is probably necessary for people who seriously study Descartes. The book is organized chronologically, almost reading like a biography, and it shows that what drove Descartes to write was often conflict with other thinkers of his day. Although De [...]

Is it really worth writing about a "ghost of a philosopher" like the writer claims?. In the last chapter that's called descartes's ghost the writer claims that descartes isn't a physics man not a physician nor an ethics teacher he's just a ghost of a philosopher. This book is like someone who's trying to write all of your failures in one book and excludes completely the mark that you left and the effect you had on those who came after you. So what the writer wants to say is this: Newton was righ [...]

When I read the works of the philosophers in the "A Very Short Introduction" series, I expect to be able to hold a modest conversation about the subject's philosophy once I complete the book. This book focused primarily on Descartes biography, rather than Cartesian philosophy. While other books in the series also contain biographical chapters, they make sure to keep them brief, so as not to obscure the philosophical lessons. I feel like I have only a very cursory understanding of Cartesian philo [...]

Read this as a preliminary before writing a paper on Descartes. Cannot honestly say that it contributed much towards my thought however. Although, in saying that, it is a pleasurable read. Doing exactly what it promises.

    24. Kawa Svaha

Descartes delved into many fields of study in his lifetime. Absolutely a great thinker. But the guide is still somewhat confusing.

    25. LunaBel

I was not really happy with this one, but then again it is a hard task to discuss Descartes in few pages.

    26. Steve Mitchell

Does exactly what it sets out to do as stated on the cover, but tries to cover too much ground in too many chapters and in too few pages.
