The authors argue that Scots of this period were inherently violent so military service abroad was a means of social advancement. Alexander Leslie and seventeen other Scotsmen rose to the general’s rank (fifteen of them in Swedish service) in Germany during the Thirty Years War, and five, including Leslie, also held high command during the British civil wars. This book is a long overdue supplement to E. L. Fischer’s The Scots in Germany (1902).
