This one was made into a movie with Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall and was a good movie. The book, as usually is the case, is better since it honors the characters and setting in ways no movie from any book could. (Sorry, Kevin!) Charley Waite and Boss Spearman are two range rovers who roam the countryside with two buds and a herd of cattle in search of adventure in Texas. I liked this movie, so I thought I would check out the book. I love westerns and one written by a woman about men adds a whole different perspective. I liked it. Certainly not the best, doesn't hold a candle to Lonesome Dove, or All The Pretty Horses, but that is a truly high standard, and I tend to be forgiving with westerns. I liked it.

It's dry and slow paced but the characters are well written and believable. The final few chapters are particularly slow because the conclusion is completely predictable. I suppose that for some this is how western should read but for me I was hoping for some less predictable developments.

Although I have seen (and own) the movie before reading the book and it is one of my favorite, I really enjoyed the original. Understanding the books and movies can be vastly different (some movies only use the title), the book is very interesting and readable.

Love Lauran Paine stories they always have a happily ever after ending (like the Chuck Norris TV series). Will read all that I can find at my local library.
